Skills Required: Volunteering with Samata is an opportunity to make a difference
to the lives of tribal people.
Staying in the Tribal
Villages: Many volunteers describe this as the most enjoyable and
rewarding part of their placement. Volunteers stay with local
villagers and are fully immersed into village life. Volunteers need to
be aware facilities are basic; most villages do not have access to
sewage systems or electricity.
Working in the Office:
Samata’s headquarters are located in the Banjara Hills, Hyderabad.
The office is a large building with a number of rooms having computer
facilities access. There is also a dining and reception room, a
kitchen and various bathrooms.
Time: A volunteer
placement does not need to be restricted by limited time. Samata can
accommodate short term placements of 1-3 months, but prefers
volunteers to stay for long term placements for over 6 months as this
will provide the volunteer an opportunity to work in an adivasi
village and to gain a deep understanding of the problems affecting the
tribal community.
Funding: Samata does
not fund travel to India, however travel whilst working with Samata
such as field trips and conference visits will be funded by the
organization. Simple accommodation can be provided in the office, but
if more luxurious surroundings are required, volunteers can stay
inexpensively in one of the nearby guesthouses or hotels. During field
visits basic accommodation is provided. Food and drinks are provided
throughout the working day.
