KHAMMAM: Measures for rehabilitation of the people of 206 villages, who would be displaced by the construction of Indira Sagar (Polavaram) project, are being taken up by the officials concerned on a war-footing.
As a majority of the villages facing submersion threat come under Bhadrachalam division, the CPM - representing the Bhadrachalam constituency in the assembly - had launched an agitation vehemently opposing construction of the project.
However, the CPI, representing the Burgumpahad constituency - existing on the other side of the Godavari bank, has been demanding lowering of the project height so that the number of villages likely to be submerged can be minimised.
Special deputy collector (land acquisition) D Dharma Rao told this website's newspaper on Friday that land acquisition measures in the Burgumpahad constituency were being speeded up. Meanwhile, the project officers have already completed work relating to issuing draft notification as well as declaration to the oustees in Rudramkota of Velerupadu mandal, besides Vinjaram village in Kukkunuru mandal which are under the threat of submersion. Payment of compensation, in the form of cheques, to the oustees was expected to be taken up during this week.
