Project oustees given cheques


Khammam, Dec. 7: The officials of land acquisition department of Polavaram Project started issuing che-ques to the farmers whose lands were acquired in the affected villages. The farmers of Vinjaram under Kukkunoor mandal received the cheques first while cheques for the farmers of Rudramkota village under Velierpad mandal are being readied. The farmers of Vinjaram who hesitated to receive cheques initially, took them after after three days. About 35 farmers in Vinjaram village were given cheques for Rs 1.12 crores and efforts are on to distribute the cheques to the other farmers in the village. A farmer from Vinjaram M. Venkateswara Rao said, "We have to embark on new life with the amount." He said that they would continue to cultivate their land till the project was completed. The officials identified land of 216 farmers to be submerged under the Polavaram project. The State government has set aside Rs 2,000 crores towards compensation to the lands in the first phase.
