KHAMMAM: Polavaram project proved to be the nemesis of the Congress in Khammam district. It had lost all the mandals that are likely to be submerged by the Polavaram project.

The party had also suffered losses in the tribal dominated Bhadrachalam sub-division. The CPM-TD alliance wrested all the eight ZPTCs in the constituency, with the CPM winning five and TDP three. Anti-Polavaram sentiment is being touted as the reason for this result.

"It was our relentless crusade against the Polavaram project that endeared our party to the people," claimed CPM MLA Tammineni Veerabhadram and TDP leader Tummala Nageswara Rao.

The CPM has been in the forefront of the agitation against the construction of the Polavaram project and has successfully mobilised public opinion against the State government.

It has also found fault with the compensatory package worked out for the affected tribals by the State Government.

As many as 260 villages in Bhadrachalam, Kunavaram, Chinturu, Vararamachandrapuram, Burgumpahad, Kukunuru and Velerupadu mandals in the district are likely to be affected by the construction of the project.

Bhadrachalam and Kukunuru have gone into the CPM kitty, while Telugu Desam had won VR Puram, Velerupadu and Kunavaram.

In Bhadrachalam sub-division, of the total 63 MPTCs, results of which were declared so far, the TD and Congress have won 31 and 21 respectively, leaving six for the Congress, three for the CPI and two for others.
